Fashion Washington

The Washington Post's fashion pub

The Washington Post launched Fashion Washington in 2009 to capture the city's increasingly stylish scene on the streets of Georgetown and Chevy Chase. The wide-open broadsheet page size pushed us from a rigid grid-system toward free and open page composition driven by the placement of expansive fashion photos.

A seasonal trend shoot is the cover and centerpiece of each issue. We worked with photographer Marge Ely and local stylists to showcase looks from national retailers as well as local designers. Each 1-to-2 day long shoot took place at a recognizable local location.

The loose page grid and breezy photo placement pushes editorial over catalogue while the text column layout gives each page structure. Thin text columns make the editorial content easily digestible and strategically placed text elements make the expansive pages energetic and give the reader multiple story entry points.

FW type

We chose Hoefler & Frere-Jones’ elegant serif typeface Chronicle for headlines and body copy and their classic Gotham for FW’s sans typeface. Raniscript, by Stephen Rapp, adds a fun and stylistic touch to department headers.
